Exploring New City Park

Part II

We don't name our streets after trees!  No the Streets in the Park are named after after Hard Core Bad A$$es.   A Thousand years ago they were called Vikings.

Amundsen Lane off of Red Hill Road is where we meet Today's  Hard Core Bad A$$ Roald Amundsen 1872-1928 born in Norway,  A Polar Explorer. He was so tough he ate his pets! He planned it that way, eating his sled dogs as a way of nourishment, on his journey to be the first to reach the South Pole, he had Sixteen dogs and came back with eleven.

Planning a trip to the North Pole was becoming a drag that Peary and Cook had  beat him.  He decides to go to the South Pole instead.  Oh, and doesn't tell his crew and financial supporters until they are underway.   Sends a telegram to Robert Falcon Scott

" BEG TO INFORM YOU FRAM PROCEEDING ANTARTIC--AMUNDSEN
Fram was the name of his ship meaning "Forward" earlier used by Amundsen's Hero, Yesterday Hard Core Bad A$$ Fridjof Nansen.

That really got Scott and his own Norwegian Supporters twisted - I mean really TWISTED.   He didn't care what they thought and did it the Sinatra way, and that before Frank was even thought of.

He beats Scott by five weeks to the South Pole.   Leaving a note pinned to the "Pole" that has a drawing of a middle finger.  Destroying Scotts day dream of being the first to the South Pole.

He has a few other first under his belt; first to traverse the Northwest Passage going from the Atlantic to the Pacific over ice.  He leads the first expedition to reach the North Pole undisputedly.
He disappeared in a plane crash in 1928 in a rescue mission looking for the airship Italia that was lost  flying over the North Pole.

Tomorrow Charles Lindbergh
